What are some healthy snack ideas?
Healthy snacks contain a combination of carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fat.
Here are some examples of healthy snacks:
Fruit and dairy
- 1/2 cup of plain, non-fat yogurt with 1 cup of berries
- 1/2 cup low-fat cottage cheese with pineapple chunks or peach slices
- 1 apple and a stick of low-fat string cheese
Fruit or vegetables with peanut butter
- 1 apple or banana with 2 tbsp. of natural peanut butter
- Celery sticks with 2 tbsp. peanut butter and raisins
Veggies and cheese, hummus, or dressing
- 1 large tomato (sliced) and 1/2 cup low-fat cottage cheese
- 1 cup cherry tomatoes and a stick of low-fat string cheese
- 1 cup broccoli and/or cauliflower with 2 tbsp. light dressing
- 1 medium red or green pepper (sliced) with 1/4 cup of hummus
- 1 cup chopped carrots and 2 tbsp. light ranch dressing
Nuts
- 1 sliced apple and 2 tbsp. walnuts
- A small handful of unsalted, unroasted nuts
Whole grains and dairy
- 2 cups of air-popped popcorn and a stick of low-fat string cheese
- 5 whole wheat crackers and 1 oz. low-fat cheese
- 3/4 cup cooked oatmeal with non-fat milk
Keep healthy snacks on hand at home, at the office, and during travel. Plan a variety of snacks to get a variety of nutrients, and to prevent getting bored with your food.
