Step 5: Ask yourself some tough questions

Steps 5-8 will help you prepare for your start date.

What are you willing to give up?

Decide what you are willing to give up to achieve your goal.

Example:

If your goal is to exercise at 7:00 am Monday and Wednesday, are you willing to give up:

  • watching a late night TV show Sunday and Tuesday night?
  • hitting the snooze button Monday and Wednesday morning?

How will you make time to achieve your goal?

It’s not about finding time because you probably won’t find any. It’s about making time.

  • What can you delete from your schedule? Delegate?
  • What can you put on the “back burner”?
  • What can you accept if it doesn’t get done?
  • Where can you spend your time more effectively?

What habits do you need to break up with?

What habits do you need to break up with in order to achieve your goal?

Example:

If your goal is to exercise at 7:00 am Monday and Wednesday, you may need to break up with:

  • making excuses not to exercise.
  • drinking alcohol or a caffeinated beverage Sunday and Tuesday night.

What will be different this time?

What will be different this time from all the other times you’ve tried to achieve the same goal?
