In the battle of the bulge there may not be any magic pill, but there is a magic number. 10,000. Several scientific studies say walking 10,000 steps every day sets off a chain reaction of health benefits.

10,000 steps a day is where the research shows your risk for heart-disease, for breast cancer, decreases significantly.

And then of course there are the waist-line benefits.

Walking 10,000 steps a day, over the course of a year, you’ll lose up to 35 pounds assuming you keep your diet the same.

Just about how many steps is 10,000? It’s about 1 hour of rapid walking, or about 4.5 miles. But, how to squeeze in an extra hour of walking every day?

There are ways to get to 10,000 steps a day into your schedule without doing an hour all at once.

For example, don’t stand still while on the telephone, pace. 1,000 steps per 15 minute call.

Watching TV? March in place and you’ll have another 1,000 steps before the news hour is over.

30 minutes of housework is worth 2,000 steps, and you’re nearly half way to the magic 10,000.

How you walk is also important. Good Housekeeping recommends you walk the way race walkers do, like you’re on a tightrope. One foot directly in front of the other.

You also want to try to make sure you’re keeping your arms at a 90 degree angle, that they are not stiff by your side.

It’s a weight control program that only requires a pedometer and a good pair of sneakers.
