Exercise and Your Health

Transcript: Exercise and Your Health

Think back to the last visit with your doctor. Did he or she or anyone in the office ask you about exercise? And equally as important, if they didn’t bring it up, did you initiate talks with your doctor about your health and how exercise or the lack there of may be effecting your health.

Exercise is Medicine – the latest program from American College of Sports Medicine with support from the American Medical Association.

One of the major goals of Exercise is Medicine is to encourage physicians to record physical activity in the same way your blood pressure and weight is recorded each time you visit your doctor.

Why do you ask? Well it’s simple. Physical inactivity is a major public health problem and contributes to a variety of diseases and health complications such as obesity, heat disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and many more.

However, consistent physical exercise is proven to be effective in the treatment and prevention of chronic disease. That’s right I said it, prevention.

For example, let’s say you have a family history of diabetes and you are a little overweight. You are a likely candidate for developing the same type of disease. But with consistent exercise and weight loss you can change that outcome. Every little bit counts.

In fact, it’s really easy to start. It just takes a commitment of at least 30 minutes of aerobic activity and 10 minutes of stretching and light muscle training, 5 days a week.

As you progress more information tips and resources will be available at www.exerciseismedicine.org. Be sure to talk to your doctor about the impact exercise can have on your overall health, especially if you have a preexisting condition or you’re at risk for other health problems.

Talking to your doctor is what Exercise is Medicine is all about. If you haven’t had a checkup in a long time consider making an appointment for a physical. All you have to do is simply ask your doctor how exercise can be tailored to your specific needs.

Openly talking with your doctor can really help to get you on the right track to overall good health. Think about it, all that from just a short conversation with your doctor, and a little bit of exercise each week.
