Aerobic Exercise – Types

Transcript: Aerobic Exercise – Types

Aerobic activity, more commonly known as aerobics, or cardio, is simply any activity that gets your heart and lungs pumping for a sustained period of time. Activities such as walking, jogging, or cycling are all good examples.

The three types of aerobic exercise we’ll discuss are no impact, low impact, and high impact. But which is best for you depends on your current level of health and fitness and your own personal preferences. Indoors, outdoors, fast, slow, it’s all up to you.

If you’re having any problems with your lower back or your knees or your simply carrying around a little bit too much weight, you should start with no impact exercises such as riding a bike or an elliptical trainer. These activities will give you a great workout without a lot of wear and tear on the body.

When starting out the last thing you want to do is to try and do too much, too fast, or choose activities that may be a little bit above your level at this point. Start off slow, work your way up, and choose activities that you’ll enjoy doing. But more importantly choose ones that you’ll stick to.

Like bike riding which you can do inside the comfort of your own home or take the scenic route outdoors.

Elliptical machines are great because they have a smooth circular motion that’s easy on your joints and most models like you see here have arm handles for a great total body no impact workout.

If you’re in pretty good shape but haven’t exercised in a long time, low impact exercise is the way to go. Something as simple as a daily walk with a friend or a loved one can really make a difference.

But if you’re the type that likes to kick it into high gear, get moving with high impact activities such as running or jogging. Hey, at this level, don’t be afraid to push it a little, be creative.

Ok, let’s recap. Assess what level of fitness you’re at and choose your activities accordingly. Whether it be no impact, low impact, or high impact it’s all about personal preference. Start off slow, work your way up to higher intensities and you’ll be surprised at what level of fitness you will achieve.
