Top 5 grain claims to ignore

Top 5 grain claims to ignore
1. Made with whole grain

In general, this product is probably made with very little whole grain.

2. 6 grams of whole grain per serving

The serving size of a product might be 30 grams which means 4/5ths of it would not be whole grain.

What does Serving Size mean on a food label?
How is the Serving Size on a food label determined?

3. Nine (9) grain

Nine different grains are used, but it doesn’t ensure any of them are whole grains.

The same principle applies to any other number of grains used (for example 12-grain).

4. Multigrain

Multiple grains are used, but it doesn’t ensure any of them are whole grains.

5. Wheat

Wheat doesn’t mean whole wheat.

Also ignore:

  • Whole grain blend
  • Good source of whole grain

These claims do not mean your bread, crackers, cereal, pastas, or cookies are healthy, although that’s what manufacturers want you to believe.

Brown doesn’t mean whole grain either: Molasses or other coloring can easily be used to make food brown and appear ‘healthy’.
