Calorie definition

A unit of energy in food and drink.

To be specific, one calorie is the amount of energy it takes to raise the temperature of one gram of water by 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit (1 degree Celsius).

Calories are found in carbohydrates, protein, fat, and alcohol:

  • 1 gram of carbohydrate has 4 calories.
  • 1 gram of protein has 4 calories.
  • 1 gram of fat has 9 calories.
  • 1 gram of alcohol has 7 calories.
