How much water should I drink each day?

The following recommendations are for adults who get little physical activity.
Your body needs more water when you exercise or live in a hot environment.

Men

Men need to drink approximately 100 oz. of water (and/or other beverages) each day.

  • This is equivalent to about 13 - 8 oz. cups of water.

Women

Women need to drink approximately 75 oz. of water (and/or other beverages) each day.

  • This is equivalent to about 9 - 8 oz. cups of water.

This may seem like a lot of water, but sedentary adults typically meet these recommendations.

The actual recommendations for water intake are higher, however 20% of your daily water comes from food.  The amounts above represent the other 80% that your body needs.
